How Point of View Changes the Story

There are different points of view in stories. What is a point of view? A point of view is the way a story is told by the narrative voice or the viewpoint. Whether a short story, children’s story or any genre, a point of view can change a story drastically. When an author begins their story, they have to decide how they will convey their story best by the point of view they use. Point of view is defined by the pronouns that are used. It is important to continue the story in the same point of view. If an author starts using a certain point of you, then shifts to a different point of view, it makes it harder to read and more confusing.

First person point of view is when the author uses the words, “I or me” to tell the story. First person is used when the author acts as a narrator.

Second person is when the author uses, “you or your” to tell the story. This is the one that is used the least amount of time. Rarely does the author talk directly to the reader.

Third person is when the author uses, “he, she, it and they” to tell the story. Often they use the characters names when writing the story.

Now lets look at how Point of view can change a story. A story written in first person looks like a memoir or personal biography and that might not be the case. Second person point of view is used to personally address the reader. Third person point of view is used more in novels and fiction writing and brings the characters perspective into view. It tells us what they might be thinking and why they are acting the way they are.

If an author is writing a nonfiction book and uses the first person to tell the story and they are not an expert of the subject, the story might not reach the reader. If the author changes the point of view to third person and use quotes from an expert, the story becomes more valid to the reader, and it might hold more klout.

 

Marketing Through Writing Valuable Content

marketingMarketing comes in different forms. One new way to market yourself is by offering valuable content to the public, which helps your website rankings on Google.  You can write articles and post them on article sites.

More and more people from all over the world is using the Internet to search for content in several different topics. A new author may search for ways to promote their book by using the Google search engine. Book readers may search the internet by using keywords such as: books, crime, mystery, romance books, etc…

As an author, you have knowledge to share with others. One way is by Blogging. This is something like writing on a website. There are two main blogging sites that are free to write on. http://Wordpress.com, http://Blogspot.com, and http://thoughts.com/free-blog

Start slowly by writing about things you know. You will be amazed at the topics you can come up with. Make sure you post something on a regular basis. You can post excerpts from your book, offer free tips to other authors, interview other authors about their books. Book readers love to read reviews on books before purchasing them. Your first post could be all about your book and include a picture, excerpt, and buy link.

Then make sure you share your blog on all of your social media sites. If you haven’t started posting on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Goodreads by now, you need to start right away.

So it is important to get your name out there by writing relevant and valuable content about topics such as:

•Reading
•Marketing tips
•Blogging

Another important way to spread your articles or valuable content is by using Syndication sites. Here is a link that list many syndication sites to use. I know it takes time, but this will help you build a brand for yourself.

Should Authors Use a Pen Name?

The use of pen names is becoming outdated. Authors should recognize that by using a pen name they might not receive the recognition that they deserve. Who knows who Samuel Langhorne Clemens is? He is only one of the most famous authors in the world. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Prince and the Pauper. His pen name is Mark Twain. Yes, everyone recognizes Mark Twain but few recognize Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

Some use a pen name to keep their lives private. It would be hard to keep your life private if your name appears on every major newspaper, social media site or television station. Most major publishers are saying that the use of pen names is outdated, unless you are already using one. Famous people in different careers are using pseudonyms such as actors, celebrities and writers to keep their lives private, because their name is hard to pronounce or for marketing purposes. Perhaps they think that a pseudonyms can help establish their brand. So to answer the question about using a pen name, I’ll let you be the judge.

If you decide on using a pen name, my suggestions are:
1. Make the name unique
2. Don’t chose a name after one of your characters in case you write several books with major characters.
3. Don’t chose a name that would conflict with any genre that you may use later on. Ex. Your pen name is Suzie Que and you write a dark fiction novel. It doesn’t go well.

Any business can market their product online by using some various strategies. Here are some basic tips to help any business market their brand online. Whether you are a large corporation or a small business, these 5 tips should help you gain some footing into the world of online marketing.

1. Know your target audience.
What type of customers are going to be interested in your product. Look for places to market your brand by doing some basic research. If you are an author, you must take into consideration what type of people will be interested in reading your book. What type of book did you write? Did you write a young adult book about romance? Did you write a nonfiction book about Health? Where would you go and try to market those types of books?

2. Use social media to build an online presence.
Why is Social media so important? It is a great avenue to reaching people all over the world. People you would never come into contact with. There are a lot of different sites that you can join. Facebook is probably the number one site. Mostly everyone knows about Facebook but didn’t know that they could set up their own business page or fan page. A fanpage is place where you can directly talk about your product or books, add photos about your business or cover art, and website links to where people can buy your product or books.

3. Build an effective website.
There are different places you can go and set up a website. Without a place to go to explore information about you and your business, it will be hard to reach new customers and therefore sell your product. Make your website engaging, appealing to the eye, and easily assessable.

4. Create a Blog and Blog regularly.

Blogging is more important than most people realize. Most companies blog to build rapport, establish their companies online presence, and educate people about their products. Share valuable content about your business and the services you provide; therefore building customers.

5. Give away something for free.
Give away something that others might be interested in. Or you can have a contest of some kind. It can be to simply give away a free copy of your book. There are so many great ideas to choose from. One author gave away a kindle for promoting their book website.

These are some basic tips that may be helpful to you no matter what your business is. Be active and post content daily on your sites. The more social sites you have the more opportunities you have to set up your brand and establish an online presence.

I recently watched the inaugural live online writing workshop ‘Finding the magic: Writing for Children’ – an innovative world first from WritersWebTV, presented by Vanessa O’Loughlin of writing.ie.

Promoting Your Books to the Public

Any new writer will have some anxiety when it comes to dealing with the public. The thing about promoting your books to different people is to be yourself. Whether you are talking to someone on a television interview or at a book signing, here are some basic things to know when talking to someone about your book.

1. Don’t give too much information. When you are trying to tell someone about your book, don’t tell them everything. You should never tell them how the story ends. The person will lose interest in your book if there is no mystery.

2. Don’t sell your book. Never try to sell the book itself. Tell people reasons that your book will help them.

3. Clarify what your book is about. If you have written a book for educational purposes, to be humorous or just plain fictional, make sure to let the reader know that in advance.

4. Don’t be too pushy. No one likes people shoving things in their faces. Simply show the book, suggest reasons they might like the book and stand back. Give the reader time to look the book over.

5. Ask them to tell their friends about your book. Word of mouth is always the best advertisement.

6. Thank the customer and hand them a business card. This should be done even if they do not purchase your book. They might not have the money to buy at the moment, but will buy at a later time.

7. Be approachable. Don’t act like you are better than everyone else. Be yourself and be friendly.

Using Different Mediums to Promote Your Books

 You have released your first book and wonder what you can do to promote it. Consider using different media sources to promote your new release. Whether it is TV, newspapers, Internet radio shows, newspapers, magazines, podcasts, video blogs, there are several venues to promote your work. To attract media outlets it might not be as simple as black and white. It might just take some extra effort on your part. Don’t forget there are several social media promotion sites to utilize.  Don’t be afraid to ask for an interview.

1. First consider your niche market. What type of book did you write. What types of media might be interested in that niche. Whether it is a book about the economy or a Christian themed book, there are certain venues that might be willing to listen to what you have to offer.

2. Make your story unique. Find ways to get the media to listen to what you have to offer. TV programs or newspapers receive hundreds of press releases daily. Make yours stand out from the others. Give them something to report. They might be looking for a feature article. If you have written a medical type book, then that gives them something to talk about in their health section. Use your imagination and come up with something different that you can approach the reporters about.

3. Use online media to promote your book. This can be through articles, blogs or book reviews. Use Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, and other social media sites.  Social media is growing drastically and it is becoming an invaluable way to market.

4. Be courteous but informative during your interview. Don’t tell them what they should do. No one likes to be bossed around. Be polite without trying to sell your book. Offer them reasons to host you on their program or on their media site.

5. Offer giveaways during media interviews. This will generate interest in your book but make sure you tell people where they can go to buy your book.

6. Advertise with local newspapers and magazines.  Get the word out that you are a new author.  Some media may contact you about an interview because you are a local author.  Offer them reasons to have you on their show.

After the interview, make sure to thank your host for their time and for allowing you to be a part of their program. Don’t be afraid to ask them to review your book. Reviews are great ways for the readers to see what your book has to offer.

Differences in Narrative and Dialogue Writing

To fully understand the difference in writing a narrative point of view versus using dialogue, one must look at the way it is written. First look at the definition of the two. A narrative is the way a story or set of events is portrayed using descriptive accounts and experiences in either the past, present or the future. The story evolves around one or several different characters but is usually told by one person overlooking the events as they unravel. A narrative is told in this fashion for entertainment or informally to tell the story.

Now lets look at dialogue. Dialogue is usually written as a conversation between two people sometimes between one person talking to himself. This form of writing is much more fun and is used more to portray the characters in a certain likeness. If their speech is poor, you assume they come from a poor background. If they used refined elegant speech, you assume that they have been well-educated. It’s funny how reading something can show different perspectives according to the actual reader. If the reader is in a bad mood, they might see the whole story as having a dark tone. The opposite can happen if they are in a good mood. The reader has to observe the characters in their own view, as well as the way the writer intended them to be. If a writer tries to write a book for teenagers, they have to limit their vocabulary usage especially if they are much older. A person’s vocabulary is always changing from an early life until adulthood. Not two people on the earth have the same exact vocabulary. This shows how differently one person can perceive a story from another person.

One person might hate the story all together and think it is beneath them. Another person the same age might look at the story and really love it. Narrative writing is much easier to understand because the writer has more control over the intended understanding of the reader.

Pricing your E-Book

booksE book sales are on the rise but what is the best price to pay for one. Many writers struggle at what a good price for their book may be. There are many things to take into consideration when pricing your E-Book.

  •  First, Look at the time it took you to write your book. Do you want to simply give away hours and hours of writing for a low price of 99 cents.
  •  Second, Look at what your soft cover sells for. If you are selling a soft cover book for 14.99, then people are more likely going to buy a 99 cent E Book over that price. You might make lots of E Book sales but who is going to buy your book. Most authors like the idea that their book is in people’s hands and others are reading what they have to say.
  •  Third, Adjust price accordingly. You might not want to price your books at 99 cents because you are not going to make anything if you do.  Look at what goes into writing a book. You spend countless hours writing, you pay someone to edit, you pay someone to design your cover art, then you spend money to market your book. You would have to sell quite a few books before you are making any kind of profit.
  • Last of all, people will judge the price of the book and think that it is not a good book by the price of it.  Usually well-known authors don’t price their books that low.  Readers will think that the book has no value or worth if it is priced too low.

Inspecting our Writings Imperfections

Writing a story or manuscript should come from within your desire to write, but by inspecting it’s imperfections will only make it better.  No author wants to be told that there are errors in their manuscript. Some mistakes may simply be small such as a misspelled word but other imperfections could be much larger.  No matter how long a writer may write a story, every story has imperfections.  Not one author has perfected writing on their first script.

Don’t be afraid to listen to criticism.  Not everyone is out to get you or hates your writing.  Some are actually offering you constructive criticism and it can only make you a better writer.  Just because you think that you are the greatest writer around doesn’t mean it is so.  You may simply be a writer that makes mistakes with grammar.  That is why it is necessary to get another opinion.  Ask someone that is not related to you to read your manuscript.  Don’t be afraid to edit, rewrite or simply start over.  The writing process is a long one but well worth it in the end.
